Foundation Waterproofing for Moisture Control and Home Energy Efficiency

Waterproofing your home’s foundation is a smart way to prevent water damage while increasing your home’s energy efficiency. This article will provide facts about foundation moisture control and guidance on waterproofing your foundation effectively.

Foundation Moisture Control

The potential for moisture problems exists anywhere building components are below grade, whether you have a basement, crawlspace, or slab-on-grade foundation. To create an energy-efficient and comfortable living space in your basement, you will need to insulate as well as properly control moisture.

Most basement water leakage results from water flowing through holes, cracks, and other discontinuities into the home’s basement walls or water wicking into the cracks and pores of porous building materials, such as masonry blocks, concrete, or wood. These tiny cracks and pores can absorb water in any direction — even upward.

Tuff-N-Dri H8 Waterproofing

Polymer-Enhanced Asphalt

TUFF-N-DRI® H8 membrane elongates to span concrete shrinkage cracks. As concrete settles, cracks naturally form in the foundation wall. TUFF-N-DRI is specially formulated to span these cracks, sealing against water leaks and keeping water out of basements.

Water pressure can build up on the outside of basement walls during a rain storm. TUFF-N-DRI H8 withstands 8 ft. of water pressure (hydrostatic head pressure while competitive product usually provides around 1 ft. of resistance. This means that even over cracks TUFF-N-DRI is protecting basement walls and keeping water out while competitive membrane fails at as little as 12 in. of water pressure.

Watchdog H3 Waterproofing

Spray-Applied, Polymer-Enhanced, Asphalt Membrane

WATCHDOG® H3 delivers a consistent thickness for maximum waterproofing performance when it cures to 40 mils. It is performance-engineered to hang in place on the wall, eliminating product waste and providing exceptional waterproofing protection.

WATCHDOG WATERPROOFING is designed for use with a foundation drainage system consistent with local codes and good construction practices. A typical exterior drainage system consists of 75-100mm (3 or 4-inch) minimum perforated drainage pipe, with gravel over the pipe, on the footer and up the face of the vertical wall, or as specified by local code. The drain tile should channel water to either an operating sump pump or to daylight. The grade should always slope away from the foundation.
