Should I Re-Insulate My Home?

When getting a new home built, you can choose the best possible insulation solutions to ensure energy efficiency and comfort. But when moving into a previously built house, you’ll be dealing with whichever insulation was installed in the past. Sometimes the home’s original insulation is sufficient. However, in many scenarios, re-insulating may be the right choice. At Radiant Drywall & Insulation, our team can retrofit your home with high-quality insulation that pays for itself after just a few years from the energy savings.

Telltale Signs Your Home Should Be Re-Insulated

Several noticeable signs can tell you it may be time to re-insulate your home.

Overpriced Energy Costs

Have you noticed that your energy bills are higher than average compared to other homes in your area? Poor insulation could be the primary culprit for overly expensive energy bills. Without adequate insulation, your air conditioning system is overexerted in warm weather while your heating system is being overused during colder months. As certified HERS raters, we can professionally evaluate your home’s energy efficiency levels and provide you with the most practical, cost-effective solutions to maximize those efficiency levels.

Drafty Interior Spaces

Are there areas in your home where drafts are causing uncomfortable fluctuations in temperature? These drafts are often caused by gaps within your home’s insulation, decreasing the effectiveness of its thermal envelope. To prevent drafts from occurring, we recommend air sealing your home.

As part of our evaluation process, we do the following as recommended by the US Department of Energy:

On the outside of your house, inspect all areas where two different building materials meet, including:

  • All exterior corners
  • Outdoor water faucets
  • Where siding and chimneys meet
  • Areas where the foundation and the bottom of exterior brick or siding meet.

Inside your home, inspect around the following areas for any cracks and gaps that could cause air leaks:

  • Electrical outlets
  • Switch plates
  • Door and window frames
  • Electrical and gas service entrances
  • Baseboards
  • Weather stripping around doors
  • Fireplace dampers
  • Attic hatches
  • Wall- or window-mounted air conditioners.
  • Cable TV and phone lines
  • Where dryer vents pass through walls
  • Vents and fans.
