Do I Need to Re-insulate My Home?

When your home insulation wears out, there are many problems that could arise. From higher energy bills and indoor drafts to health risks like allergens and mold – old insulation causes trouble in several ways.

When to Replace Your Home’s Insulation

  • High energy bills: If you see a rise in your energy bills that usually means that your heating system and air conditioning are working overtime and it could be a sign that you need to re-insulate your home.
  • Drafty rooms: It can be quite frustrating to live in a home where you’re cold in one room and warm in another. Poor insulation can often cause a draft and fluctuation in temperatures from one room to the next. If you experience this, it usually means that heat is retained in rooms where your insulation is in good shape, but the heat is escaping in rooms where the insulation needs to be replaced.
  • Household pests: Insects and rodents commonly make their way into poorly sealed homes and nest in worn-out insulation, particularly if it is fiberglass because it is easy for them to tear apart. If you see pests or holes in your insulation, it may mean it’s time to replace it.
  • Moisture, mold, and mildew problems: Water damage and any kind of moisture in your insulation will only lead to mold and mildew growth. The most common places for moisture are in attics and crawl spaces because these are cold and dark places. If you look at your insulation and see that it is wet, sagging, or looks moldy, it’s time to re-insulate your home right away as mold is very harmful to breathe in.
